US Census Records - British
Emigration Links

|
As I get more and more contacts from our friends across the Atlantic I have now started to develop a section of the site to link the many US census records available with those in the UK census, which should help those initial problems trying to find out where in the UK your family may have come from. This is going to be quite a task, and with some of the more "common" names, such as Thomas, Ann, Elizabeth, William and so on it may just not be possible to see which record may be theirs. The US census in many ways is arguably more useful than the UK census. The census started out in the early 19th century, and by 1850 was recording birthplace (by country rather than county in the case of immigrants), which is where my links will begin. It is also available up to 1930, much better than the UK version! From 1850 up to 1880, the census records birthplace along with names, ages, home at the time of the census and occupation. 1880 additionally records the relationship of each to the Head of the household, together with the birthplace of each persons parents. Sadly the 1890 census was almost completely destroyed by fire.

This section of the site will take some time to truly become useful - at this starting point (September 2004) there are many US census records held and much work to be done to link back to the UK records. The existing pages for Passenger records will be maintained, and it is hoped to cross-link to these pages in due course. The table to the right shows progress so far, and gives links to each page. Good hunting. |
